A better copy paste?

This is really frustrating- I copy a clip on a track and it seems as though by default it will always paste it into Track 1, regardless of where my focus just was.  This will oftentimes then clobber data right in the middle of Track 1.  Gets even worse if linked audio is involved.

Is there any way to tell it, "no, paste it here in this track I was just manipulating"?
