Re: How can I transfer hi8 to a computer not having a firewire connector?

It's far cheaper to add a Firewire card to your computer than to buy that unit. I just bought one that works beautifully ...

... for $34 plus shipping.

I would add that if you go into the "properties" through Device Manager you can choose to "rollback" and then choose the "legacy" option, which will mean that it doesn't make any difference to Windows if you use the 6-pin (one side is a v-shape) connection 1394 "a" type (400mbps) or the 9-pin rectangular 1394 "b" connection (800mbps). If you use the newest driver for the card, it will work only through the 9-pin 1394b connection port and wire type.

Most camcorders used the small plug with a divot (bent in v-shape) on one side ... so typically you'd need either the 1394b 9-pin cord to mini-firewire or "iLink" style plug, or if using the legacy driver for the card, either that or the 6-pin 1394a firewire to mini/iLink plug. Of course, check your camera.

Then within PrPro, you set up a new project, don't worry about creating a sequence ... go to File->Capture, choose the DV option, and you should ... with the camera connected to the computer and in playback mode but paused, see a window with your footage in it. You can record a bit, give it a name & other metadata, then just drag that onto the "New Item" icon to make a new sequence to fit your footage.
