The Adobe DNG converter program is a Stand Alone program. It works all by itself even if you didn't have any version of Photoshop installed on your computer.
But the 7.4 converter might not be able to read those NEF files. You need the newest version of the converter, 8.7.1, which is linked to in the above post.
